The Nevada Appeal’s Silver Dollars & Wooden Nickels feature recognizes achievements from the capital region and, when warranted, points out other acts that missed the mark.
SILVER DOLLAR: To Carson City Sheriff’s Deputy Wayne Wheeler for being honored with a proclamation from the Governor’s Office for his service in the military and in law enforcement. Feb. 12, 2016, was declared as Wayne Wheeler Day. Wheeler was deployed with the United States Navy from 1988 to 1991 during Desert Storm and was deployed to Afghanistan from 2001 to 2002 with the United States Air National Guard. In Afghanistan, he was stationed with the 152nd Squadron and was awarded the Air Force Combat Medal. Wheeler has served 17 years with the Sheriff’s Office. He was a part of SWAT for a decade, with four years as a SWAT leader. He’s also served in patrol, as a Field Training Officer, a Radar/Lidar instructor, a traffic stop teacher at the POST academy, and a Motors Division officer for 10 years.
SILVER DOLLAR: To Carson City’s Autumn Cuellar for being named the Boys and Girls Clubs State Youth of the Year.
SILVER DOLLAR: To Gov. Brian Sandoval for just being considered for the U.S. Supreme Court. No matter where you stand politically on the issue, it was an honor for Sandoval, who withdrew his name from consideration, for just being considered.
SILVER DOLLAR: To Carson High’s Peter Garrett for being named the Gatorade State Player of the Year in boys soccer.
SILVER DOLLAR: To the Carson City Sheriff’s Aero Squadron, who celebrated its 50th year.
