Nevada Appeal at 150: May 1963

A river crossing at Piñon Hills. Based on the daily data from Carson City, there were no major rain events on or prior to this photo being taken on May 21, 1963. Temperatures were unusually warm from May 17-21, in the mid- to upper-80s, so perhaps there was rapid snowmelt in the mountains. March and April 1963 recorded very heavy snowfall. In fact, April 1963 was the snowiest April on record at Twin Lakes, at 8,000 feet in Alpine County, Calif., with 14 feet of snow falling. The source for this information is Jim Ashby, climatologist at the Western Regional Climate Center.
