Sierra Nevada Forums to cover cost, value of education

Sierra Nevada Forums on Wednesday will hold one of its events at the Brewery Arts Center to delve into education issues.

The Dollars & Sense of Education, as the forum is billed, begins at 6 p.m. in the BAC’s Performance Hall at 511 King St. Admission is free but donations, organizers say, are appreciated. Doors open at 5:30 p.m.

Panelists: Steve Canavero, Nevada Department of Education interim superintendent of public instruction; Amanda Morgan from the Education Law Center of New Jersey; Richard Stokes, Carson City School District superintendent, and Jeff Zander, Elko County School District superintendent.

Canavero will represent his office’s perspective. Morgan will provide results of national studies regarding adequate education funding and equity of funding. Stokes will explain application of Race to the Top funds. Zander will focus on funding policies for Nevada’s Plan.

A question and answer period normally follows forum presentations.

Sierra Nevada Forums’ mission is to provide fact-based and verifiable information to the public.
