Flag. Col. Curry, with the assistance of others, raised the new flagstaff on the Capitol, and it now floats the Star Spangled Banner in all its proud magnificence. This time, the flag and staff are a true bill.

Boycott. The Chinese threw down the gauntlet to whites and challenged them by sending notices to leading merchants. The notice informed them they should boycott their businesses as long as they took active part in the anti-Chinese movement. H. S. Mason, M. Cohn, Walter Chedic and George Hark have been singled out for the boycott.

Chinese New Year. Throughout this state the Chinese New Year is in force. The Chinese are celebrating until the revenues are exhausted. Carson visitor dies. Mrs. Edith Atherton Carpenter died at the family home in Carson City. She taught school in Pyramid Lake and Mill Station schools in Nevada and then married Dr. Ford A. Carpenter. After her marriage, she moved to Los Angeles. Survivors include her husband, sisters Idelle C. Pettigrew and Miss Grace M. Atherton of Carson City; and a niece, Gladys P. Farwell of San Francisco.

Amnesia victim. A ranch hand arriving in Carson City knows nothing about himself. He arrived with $14 in bills, no change and no wallet. He had a cigarette lighter, a pocketknife and a pack of cigarettes with a California tax stamp — and a bus ticket to Carson City. He didn’t recognize his suggested name, Donald Wayne Kelling.

20 Years Ago

Superintendent. Carson City School District Leon Mattingley has been chosen as the new superintendent out of field of 35 competitors. He comes from Simi Valley Unified School District, where he served as assistant superintendent of personnel services.

Sue Ballew is the daughter of Bill Dolan, who wrote this column for the Nevada Appeal from 1947 until his death in 2006.
