Bike rack sponsorships available

Carson City is not yet listed on Bicycle Magazine’s list of top 50 bicycle friendly cities, but could earn this distinction in the future when the reinvention of our downtown is complete in late fall this year.

Our downtown streets are being narrowed and a bike lane added so current and future bicyclists may feel safer as they pedal through our downtown to connect to our many bicycle trails.

As we attract more cyclists, we need to accommodate their need to tether their bicycles to a beautiful bicycle rack that will fit within the theme now being planned along Carson Street.

It’s anticipated 50 bicycle racks will be needed between Washington and Fifth Streets on each side of Carson Street. To date, 13 have been committed and the public is invited to be a part of the redevelopment of the downtown by purchasing a bicycle rack for $500 that will include a plaque that will show “ownership” of the rack. All racks will be maintained by the city.

Those who have recently purchased a bicycle rack have done so not only to show support, but to memorialize an individual who may have enjoyed the outdoors, thus providing a lasting tribute for the lifetime of the rack. Two sponsors may purchase a rack, thus splitting the cost.

Many cities are now becoming bike friendly as emphasis grows on downtown living and creating more of a “green environment.”
