Eastern publications: We are indebted to Mr. Fox of the Carson News Depot for copies of Harpers, Frank Leslie’s Illustrated Weeklies, Phunny Phellow, Yankee Notions, the New York Ledger and the Missouri Republican which came by mail steamer.

The quill drivers: Members of the California Press Association spent their day in Carson, many going to Shaw’s Hot Springs and then the entire party visited the State Prison and examined the prehistoric foot prints. The only man in the party who had a foot anywhere near the size of the prints in the quarry was the gigantic Bogardus of Figaro. Mr. Houseworth, the photographer, took several views of the Prison, Capitol building, Appeal office, etc. (continued on Saturday).

Miss Smiley engagement: Mrs. John Smiley announced the engagement of her daughter, Eleanor to Frans E. Benson, at an appointed luncheon in the Guild Hall of St. Peters Episcopal Church. Miss Smiley entered Carson City schools in the fifth grade and graduated with the class of 1945.

“Animal Rock”: Jim Moore appeared at the Carson City Community Center to benefit the Children’s Museum of Northern Nevada. He used rhymes, songs and audience participation to send children messages that acknowledge fear of terrorist acts. “The 911 song is good. It rhymes and is easy for kids to remember. It’s good because it’s coming from someone other than the parents.”
Sue Ballew is the daughter of Bill Dolan, who wrote this column for the Nevada Appeal from 1947 until his death in 2006.
