Ron Wood honoring Sheriff Ken Furlong during its Annual Community Leader of the Year celebration

The Ron Wood Family Resource Center will be holding its Annual Community Leader of the Year celebration and benefit Friday, June 10.

This year, Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong will be honored as the Community Leader of the Year for his years of community service and dedication to the youths and families of Carson.

“It is such an honor and I am so humbled to receive this,” Furlong said.

This year, the event will have a special Community Youth Leader of the Year to spotlight 12 youth leaders in the community and will reward the youth with scholarship money for their service to the community.

“This year Ron Wood has placed children at such a high level of investment and to have my name associated with that is such an honor,” Furlong said. “We need to invest in our kids.”

The event will be held at the Governor’s Mansion from 5 to 8 p.m. It is a fundraiser for the Ron Wood center for money to continue services that benefit families in need in the community. It will be a night of food, music, an auction and a raffle.

Furlong said that it is important to have the community there to support each other because in his opinion, Ron Wood is the best place to go for community resources and helping raise money for them to continue that is vital.

“The Ron Wood Center is the single best one stop to get assistance in this town,” Furlong said. “Whether it is helping with challenging children, accommodations like the food bank or employment training, Ron Wood has stood up to serve this community. There isn’t one employee there that wouldn’t give of their own shirt.”

This commitment to the community and the children is why people should go to the fundraiser.

“They care about the kids... and you will want to come to the auction because it’s fun and a wonderful atmosphere,” Furlong said. “So go, put up with me, bid at the auction because this isn’t about what basket you get, you are helping to ensure that a child has a car seat, that someone has the resources to make sure their rent is paid, or get counseling to better improve their lives. (The money raised) means a family will benefit and what greater feeling could you get in return?”

Tickets will be sold for $40 for adults and $15 for youths aged 5-12.

The Center is also asking the community for product and service donations for the raffle and auction items. Donations will benefit families in the community and businesses will receive advertising to those attending the event. All donations are tax-deductible.
