The Nevada Appeal’s Silver Dollars & Wooden Nickels feature recognizes achievements from the capital region and, when warranted, points out other acts that missed the mark.
WOODEN NICKEL: We normally don’t start off this column with a wooden nickel, but we do this just to condemn those who vandalized Carson High’s football stadium the week of graduation. It was vandalism, pure and simple. But...
SILVER DOLLAR: We also thank the hundreds of volunteers from Carson and Douglas who came together to help clean up the vandalism in assisting Carson High’s preparation for its graduation.
SILVER DOLLAR: And while we’re on the subject, we’d also like to congratulate the thousands of high school and college graduates who graduated in the last few weeks and acknowledge the family, friends and educators whose support made their achievement possible.
SILVER DOLLAR: We’d also like to recognize the Carson High class of 2016 for carrying on a recent tradition that began in 2010 in which the C on C Hill has been changed to 16. We know the class will turn the 16 back into a C. So those who seem to have a problem with this tradition and somehow equate it to what was done last week to the CHS football field, we have two words: Lighten up.
SILVER DOLLAR: Congratulations to CHS student Jiovanna Wong-Furtunato for qualifying for not one, not two, but three national competitions this summer.
SILVER DOLLAR: To those who made it possible for Catmandu, our local sanctuary for cats, to re-open at least on a limited basis.
