Carson City Brewery Arts Center hosting Milton Chen’s talk on innovation March 16

Inspiring innovation and entrepreneurship will be the focus of a presentation by author and world-renown speaker Milton Chen on Wednesday evening at the Brewery Arts Center.

“We want to inspire the community to come together and get involved,” said Miya MacKenzie, the chief professional officer for Adams Hub. “Create a community that is working together to find solutions.”

The Adams Hub is sponsoring the Launching Innovative Thinking event, along with the Carson City Library, Carson City School District, Sierra Nevada Forums and the Boys and Girls Clubs of Western Nevada. Entrepreneurs Assembly and New Entrepreneur Network are also sponsors.

It will be the second visit Chen, author of “Education Nation,” has made to the capital city.

“When he spoke in 2011, it really spurred on some great changes,” MacKenzie said. “We’re hoping to have the same thing happen again.”

On a two-day speaking tour, Chen will address students at Carson High, Carson Middle, Eagle Valley Middle and St. Teresa of Avila schools. He will also tour the Innevation Center at the University of Nevada, Reno.

Wednesday’s presentation, from 6-8 p.m., is free and open to the public.

Chen will discuss the principles of his book as well as how to embrace a habit of learning, how to use this new-found energy to encourage community engagement, spark innovation and impact the future of the community.

MacKenzie said the presentation coincides with Adams Hub’s plan to expand services focused on technology start-ups. The Hub will begin hosting workshops and seminars for new and expanding businesses in other fields.

She said the spirit of entrepreneurship ignites everything from business innovation to organized volunteers to clean local parks and trails.

“Someone with an entrepreneurial mindset is someone who is a problem solver,” she said. “They also start to take steps to implement a solution.”

Chen is senior fellow and executive director, emeritus at The George Lucas Educational Foundation, a nonprofit operating foundation that produces the award-winning Edutopia website on innovative K-12 learning. He was also named Jedi Master by George Lucas.
