Virginia City Correspondence. The proprietor of the theater, Max Walter, has tried hard to secure talent, but with the exception of Johnny Collins and Miss Josephine, the talent is like John Randolph’s mackerel, “shine and stink and stink and shine.”

Party. Miss Lilly Wright had a party at her home. At her last party there were 45 guests and refreshments so lavish, the young misses of the city say they would rather go to one of Miss Wright’s parties than to the theater. There was music, dancing and flirting and when 11 o’clock came nobody wanted to go until Mr. Sam Wright announced that he had sent over to the Appeal to have the editor come over and sing Killarny to the children. They got on their coats and left for the Appeal.

Not a poor man’s camp. Ely is one of the best communities for the capitalist and businessman. It takes money and time to demonstrate a copper camp. Smelters and concentrating plants take capital and lots of it. (White Pine News)

State University news. Carolyn Bordewich and Margaret Snyder received Chi Delta Phi pins which are emblems of the National Honorary English Sorority.

50 Years Ago

Nevada State Children’s Home gift. The gift will permit “vacation trips” for the children each year. The gift was interest from a $100,000 trust fund deposited in a bank by brothers John and Victor Saturno of Reno to provide a fund for deserving children from the home to make trips to points of interest. The interest amount from this fund amounts to $3,000 a year.

Advertisement. “You’re invited to our house on Sunday. The Nevada Appeal wants to show off its newly remodeled building. Come help celebrate the end of construction and meet the folks who produce your newspaper, the new Nevada Appeal, signed Jeff Ackerman.”

Sue Ballew is the daughter of Bill Dolan, who wrote this column for the Nevada Appeal from 1947 until his death in 2006.
