Nevada Appeal at 150: Feb. 1, 1961: World’s first space chimp home safe

Ham the happy space chimp returned to the United States from a 420-mile rocket trip to help scientists find out whether space is safe for people.

The 3 1/2-year-old chimpanzee arrived at Patrick Air Force Base aboard an Air Force C131 plane which had brought him 170 miles from Grand Bahama Island.

Ham is the first hominid launched into space.
