SILVER DOLLARS AND WOODEN NICKELS: Carson City’s officer and a gentleman

The Nevada Appeal’s Silver Dollars & Wooden Nickels feature recognizes achievements from the capital region and, when warranted, points out other acts that missed the mark.

SILVER DOLLAR: To Cole Sonnemann, a reserve sergeant with the Carson City Sheriff’s Office, who was commissioned Wednesday as a Second Lieutenant for the U.S. Army National Guard as a Field Artillery Officer with the 1-143 Field Artillery Regiment, 79th Brigade Combat team based in Lodi, Calif. The 23-year-old was honored at a commissioning ceremony at the University of Nevada.

SILVER DOLLAR: To Western Nevada College’s D.J. Peters for being named the Scenic West Athletic Conference Player of the Year in baseball.

SILVER DOLLAR: To Caleb Cage for being named the Nevada Veteran of the Month for May by Gov. Brian Sandoval.

SILVER DOLLAR: The Carson High School Speech and Debate Sadie Share, Sawyer Barnett and Sandro Figueroa for qualifying for the national finals.

SILVER DOLLAR: To the Carson City Host Lions Club and other organizations and individuals who took part in organizing and participating in the Kids Fishing Day held at Baily Pond.
