Mr. Bob Howland’s condition. Dr. Munckton assured us that his patient was getting along bravely. Bob feels in good spirits and is as cheerful and lively as a cricket.

Acknowledgement. The Appeal thanks Congressman Woodburn for the packages of seeds. No man in Nevada has stretched out such a warm and helping hand as Congressman Woodburn. Every month he brings us little packages of seeds from Washington with Billy Woodburn’s frank on it ... packets of rose radish, new style turnips, back-action cabbage. The seeds never came up when planted — but it goes to show that the Congressman remembers his constituent.

Notice from F. J. Steinmetz (drug store). A rumor that I have advanced the price of drugs since the recent earthquake and fire in San Francisco are absolutely false.

Vegas Helldorado. An old logging wagon driven by ex-teamsters will represent Carson City in the gigantic Helldorado celebration in Las Vegas. The wagon is being sent as a “kick-off” in an advance publicity scheme for the Nevada Day celebration. The wagon, weighing about four tons, drawn by horses, is used in nearly every Nevada Day celebration.

50 Years Ago

Harry Mighels is retiring from the State Highway Department after 16 years. He is a native of Carson City and his parents were pioneer journalists in western Nevada. His grandfather founded and edited the Carson City Daily Appeal, operated by the Mighels’ family for nearly 90 years.

20 Years Ago

Renaissance Day. Fuji Park will be transformed into a 16th Century village called Pembrooke for the Renaissance Faire which include more than 50 vendors displaying clothing and jewelry available in the 16th Century. The Knights of the Azure Cross will be holding a jousting competition. Other events include blacksmithing and May Pole dances.

Sue Ballew is the daughter of Bill Dolan, who wrote this column for the Nevada Appeal from 1947 until his death in 2006.
