Hundreds of shoppers lined up in wintery weather Wednesday, Nov. 16, for the 9 a.m. grand opening of the new FoodMaxx store in Sparks. The line stretched from the west entrance of the discount grocery store to the former Target building for chance at opening day specials, including a free bag of food for the the first 200 customers.
“I haven’t seen this many people (at a grand opening) since the In-N-Out (Burger) opened,” said City Councilman Ron Smith, who spoke on behalf of Mayor Geno Martini.
Frank Capps, the general manager of FoodMaxx spoke briefly to the crowd and Dalton Soliman, store manager, introduced his department managers.
Soliman has been in the area for four years and previously managed the Save Mart store on Keystone.
A check for $1,000 was presented to Lincoln Park Elementary School, the store’s adopted school, and students sang a song about foods we eat at Thanksgiving.
The Sparks store is the first FoodMaxx store in Nevada, and is a warehouse-style discount store owned and operated by Save Mart. It replaces a Save Mart store in that location.
A second Nevada store will open in Carson City Dec. 7. The FoodMaxx brand includes 52 stores throughout California. The Sparks and Carson stores will bring the brand to 54 stores.
