Improper salute from Commander in Chief

On Aug. 31, as President Obama stepped onto the tarmac at Nevada Air National Guard to meet the Air Force officer who was there to greet him, Obama returned the officer’s salute with his left hand in his pants pocket. Not a proper salute in accordance with the military manual.

After seven and a half years, is it too late for the Commander in Chief to learn the proper protocol on how to return a salute?
