Thoughts on education testing, school lunches

I’d like to take a moment to address a few of the points of the recent standardized testing and school cafeteria article on Sept. 14, and respond as a former student of the Nevada education system.

Personally, I feel testing such as the End of Course exams to be a waste of time — of teachers’ time, students’ time and overall learning time. We’ve come to a point in a our society where we focus so much on testing that teachers are handicapped in teaching the subject matter.

If you want a real diagnosis on the system, just find out how many students are in remedial classes. Question answered. Then you can take more time to figure out how to get the student to the next level.

The second topic of the article was school lunches. Now, I’m not trying to be harsh, but in my experience (especially recently) I’ve had to eat more than a couple of meals that were not my first choice. Here’s the thing: They were there, and they filled my stomach. That’s all that matters to me. If you’re going to eat the school lunch, then eat the food and be happy it’s there. If you don’t like it, then bring your own food. Toughen up a little bit, and learn that you get what you get.

The upcoming generations are getting soft, but life is still hard. “Just get tougher with it.”
