Why? An English paper states that the Atlantic cable from daylight until two o’clock in the afternoon works with great difficulty. It becomes easier and more rapid all through the night. The editor of the Telegrapher has noticed this fact on land lines.

Queen Victoria: The Queen is said to maintain a permanent boycott against the town of Bath, England. A half-century ago some person in a crowd in Bath made an uncomplimentary remark about her costume. Victoria never visited the town again.

Pioneer lady has died: Miss Harriet Wingate (aka Aunt Hattie) was born in Milton Massachusetts March 1818 and the age of 88 has died at the residence of her sister, Mrs. Deborah Cobb. She came to Carson with her sister in 1875 and lived here continuously. She resembled a character from a story book and one often wondered what romance was hidden in the chapters of her life story. She was a romantic old lady interested in the affairs of the young ones around her and ready to listen to their troubles as well as their joys.

Whisker deadlines: ‘Ware the hoodlums! The time for Nevada Day beards is at hand. Enforcement of the whisker edict has been turned over to the Eagles ... now combing its membership for the roughest hoodlums available, who will pursue whiskerless Carsonians down alleys and comb them out from under back porches.
