Reno man died in I-580 crash

A 59-year-old Reno man was identified as the motorcyclist who died during a crash on southbound I-580 in Carson City on Friday.

According to the Nevada Highway Patrol, troopers responded at 9:06 a.m. to I-580, just south of Highway 50 exit for a serious injury crash involving a motorcycle and an SUV.

The investigation shows that the motorcycle rider, identified as Jonathan Treen Proehl, was ejected off the motorcycle after running into the left rear of a white 2002 Mercedes SUV. The silver BMW motorcycle was traveling at highway speeds approaching the traffic, which was backed up because of freeway construction.

Proehl died at the scene.

The driver of the Mercedes SUV received minor injuries and was treated on scene.

Trooper Karen Garretson of the Nevada Highway Patrol’s Multi-disciplinary Investigation and Reconstruction Team is investigating this crash. Anyone who may have witnessed this incident or who may have any information related to this crash is encouraged to contact Garretson at 775-687-9618 or kgarretson@dps.state.nv.us regarding case No. 170702804.
