Catching a Pig: Points and authorities from one who has tried it. There are many things in this world that look comparatively easy, but which a trial demonstrates, call forth a man’s most serious effort. Last Thursday we ambled up to a pig like a member of the Manhattan ball club getting on deck for a strike, and reached for his hind leg. Just then he had to take a step we had not expected him to make, and the leg was not there anymore. A woman who had been sitting on the steps to act as a referee, gave the match to the pig.

Secretary of War Baker and Secretary of the Navy Daniels have been given to the Red Cross the following statement: “The Secretaries wish the people of this country to know that under no circumstances do they want to discourage our good men from knitting or otherwise voluntarily providing through the Red Cross comforts for our soldiers and sailors.”

Santa Claus will come to town for the kiddies Friday night at 7, Don Fowle, manager of the Carson City Chamber of Commerce, said today. Retail merchants division of the chamber will officially open the Christmas shopping season Friday in front of the post office, he said.

Sen. Chic Hecht, R-Nev., was the guest Wednesday at a fundraiser hosted by an organization pushing a nuclear waste bill that is bitterly opposed by Nevada officials.
