When making out the list of friends and loved ones who will receive a Valentine this year, Car-son City residents may consider one addition: The library.
“It’s a nice way to raise awareness,” said Amy Lauder, collection development manager for the Carson City Library. “It’s important that city leaders know what the community thinks is important.”
The Carson City Library kicked off the “I Love My Library” campaign Saturday where patrons can make a Valentine explaining why they love the library. The cards will then be delivered to the Carson City Board of Supervisors, which funds the library, and the Library Board of Trustees, which governs the library, at the end of the month.
“I could not say no to this fun and crafty idea,” said Sena Loyd, director of the library. “It will be a fun experience for staff to deliver these valentines at the end of the month to the Board of Supervisors, and to share them with the Library Board of Trustees.”
Lauder said the idea from a similar project she did nationally last year.
“We’ve set up a small craft station inside the library,” Lauder said. “We’re encouraging our patrons and anyone who loves the library to craft and Valentine and write a note to the supervisors about why they love the library. It’s much stronger if it comes from the patrons.”
Cards can also be sent electronically to valentine@carsoncitylibrary.org.
It could serve as a good project for getting children involved in the community.
“A lot of our patrons are families with young children,” Lauder said. “That’s something they can work on together.”
She envisions the project being successful.
“I know we have people who come in and tell our staff they had a good experience,” Lauder said. “We’re hoping they will be able to transfer that message on to the governing bodies that keep the library doors open.”
