Nevada Legislature introduces Internet privacy bill

Legislative leadership on Thursday introduced a bill they say is designed to strengthen Internet privacy protections.

“For generations, privacy has been an essential Nevada value and that should not change in the Internet age,” said Senate Majority Leader Aaron Ford and Assembly Speaker Jason Frierson in a joint statement.

They said SB538 simply requires consumers be notified when their personal information is being collected online.

The bill would allow the Attorney General’s office to bring a civil action against Internet sites or service providers for violating the rules.

They said the legislation was drafted following congressional approval of legislation relaxing privacy protections that required those disclosures and required consent before any such information was sold. They charged Nevada Sen. Dean Heller was one of the sponsors of that rollback legislation.
