Como: A large fire in the mountains in the direction of Como was seen burning. Wood is not plentiful in that region, and it is thought this to be work of an incendiary.

All sorts: Car porters no longer have to climb over the heads of passengers to light old fashioned oil lamps — the conductor touches a button and the car is instantly lighted by electricity.

Hugging and kissing is prohibited in the parks of Baltimore, and police are notified to arrest parties violating the ordinance. Officer Furlong (of Carson) says that an ordinance of this kind is needed in this city in the summer months.

110 Years Ago

Found their legs: Two beggars from Sparks applied for alms from Maurice O’Connor. When he refused, they began using abusive language and hurling missals. Friends came to the rescue ... the beggars threw away their crutches — and broke a record in running toward Reno.

70 Years Ago

Oldest newspaper: The Carson City Nevada Appeal, Nevada’s oldest daily newspaper, began its 83rd year of publication. Established by E. F. McElwain, J. Barrett and Marshall Robinson with Editor Harry Mighels, it began publication on May 16, 1865. The Appeal carried news that Jefferson Davis had been captured, and the people of Carson proceeded to hang the ex-confederate in effigy.
