150 Years Ago

Passenger hack: The Madeira boys are getting a new passenger hack that will run between Carson and Empire twice a day. When they get it, they will let his light shine so that all can see it. We have faith in the future of Carson. Let those who believe as we do feel encouraged to keep up their lick.

130 Years Ago

The Enterprise: The newspaper passes out of the hands of its old management. It was originally founded in Genoa, and the type and material was packed over the mountains on mules. It was brought to Virginia City and run by Joe Goodman and Dennis McCarthy and became a grand paper. It was the pride of Virginia City and the coast, and here that Mark Twain and Dan DeQuille ground out their funny things.

110 Years Ago

Votes are being taken for Queen of the Carnival at 5 cents a vote and for the Goddess of Liberty at 1 cent a vote. Following is the vote to date for the Queen of the Carnival — Miss Alice Hannah (258), Miss Stella Colcord (248), Miss Laura Thompson (210), Miss Rose Bergman (197), Miss Ethel Davis (75). For Goddess of Liberty: Miss Francis Olding (250), Miss Annie Sevey (110), Miss Emma Larson (50).

100 Years Ago

At the carnival: The lady handling electricity provided amusement especially when she gave her demonstration of money electrified. The giant and giantess were all they claimed to be. Carson’s tallest men stood beside the burly Scotchman and seemed like a school boy in comparison.

70 Years Ago

Leisure Hour Club: Nearly 70 people were in attendance at the Leisure Hour Club Hall for the dinner and installation of officers. New officers include Miriam Kispert, president; Mrs. Lucy Crowell, vice president; Mrs. Rose Cochran, secretary; Mrs. Thomas Robinson, corresponding secretary; Mrs. Clara M. Anderson, treasurer; Mrs. Leo Miller, program chairman; and Mrs. G. B. Spradling, board of directors.

Sue Ballew is the daughter of Bill Dolan, who wrote this column for the Nevada Appeal from 1947 until his death in 2006.
