Memorial fundraiser in honor of late coach to raise Alzheimer’s awareness

An Alzheimer’s disease awareness fundraiser is taking place in memory of Richard Ernest Blaver, widely known as Coach Blaver, who lost his battle against the disease in May.

Coach Blaver’s wife Natalie is organizing the Sept. 15 Coach Blaver Memorial Fundraiser for the second year.

Last year’s charity event raised $4,675. This year’s goal is to reach the $5,000 mark.

“Every penny raised goes directly to the Northern California and Northern Nevada Alzheimer’s Association and that money stays in our community to assist local families with much needed benefits,” said a notice from the fundraiser committee.

The fundraiser — boasting music, food and raffle prizes in addition to friends, family and fun — will take place 4-7 p.m. Sept. 15 at the Westside Pour House, 110 W. Telegraph St.

The $10 cost at the door will cover food. Grand prize raffle tickets will be sold for $10 each or $100 for 12. The price for small raffle tickets are $1 each or $5 for six.

The proceeds raised will go toward research, treatment and respite care for families caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s disease.

“Alzheimer’s disease is a horrific affliction that is on the rise globally. While it is still greatly misunderstood, there have been many breakthroughs in treatment and research is ongoing to further assist those affected by the disease. Much more time and funding is needed though to completely understand the prevention and treatment of this heartbreaking condition,” the committee said.

Other than monetary donations, contributions of raffle prizes are also being collected from businesses and individuals who want to honor Coach Blaver.

“Coach Blaver was a very good man who taught and coached children in Northern Nevada for over 30 years. He never knew a stranger and was dearly loved by all those with whom he had contact,” according to the committee.

Donations can be sent to Friends of Coach Blaver Memorial Alzheimer’s Fundraiser, c/o Debora McCurry, 1350 Thompson St., Carson City, 89703-0605.
