Mrs. O. Nay, who was burned out a few days ago, lost all her household effects, and what little money she had saved up was stolen during the process of the fire. She has been compelled to borrow a stove and bed of the neighbors and sleep out of doors. She has several young children and is in a very destitute condition. Her case appeals strongly to public sympathy, and a subscription should be raised for her immediate necessities.

Notice has been received by the local board of acceptance of Arnold Allen Millard at Fort Riley, Kan., for general military service. Young Millard will be remembered by everyone in Carson, where he was held in high esteem. He left here for the Kansas camp a few weeks ago.

Sale of the Carson City Chronicle to George H. Payne, publisher of the Nevada Appeal, was announced Friday by Wesley L. Davis Jr. Payne took possession of the Chronicle immediately and publication will resume at its present location.

A community-wide raking and reseeding effort planned for this weekend to save fire-scarred hills west of Carson City from erosion and the city from possible flood damage is gone with the wind. The project was called after winds estimated at 45 mph blew approximately 75 percent of the 17,000 pounds of seeds air dropped earlier this week from here to Dayton.

The Dangers of Carson. Editor of the Appeal: Carson City is a dangerous place. It is dangerous, that is, to any who may come here, not expecting to remain. The danger is that the people here will steal away their hearts, and compel them to remain, in spite of themselves.

Some months ago Zach Fields, of Genoa, was charged with poisoning the water in his father-in-law’s blacksmith shop. On the preliminary examination he proved an alibi. On Friday last in Los Angeles he shot his wife — the daughter of William Gray, of Genoa — and then killed himself. He shot his wife in the right breast and she is still alive. He shot himself between the eyes and died instantly. Mr. Gray went down to Los Angeles on Sunday to see his daughter, who may recover. Insanity is ascribed as the cause of Field’s act.

Field Secretary H.C. Osterman of the Lincoln Highway arrived in Carson this morning from Sacramento and this afternoon, with his two assistants, met with several prominent businessmen and state officials at the Arlington hotel to discuss proposed measures for the improvement of Western Nevada’s portion of the Lincoln Highway.

Three Carson City residents were arrested Sunday for their alleged involvement in an odometer rollback scheme in which they falsely obtained about $2 million by rolling back the odometers on 330 cars and selling them at wholesale prices to car dealers locally.

The Grand Army. An order has been issued from the headquarters of the Grand Army of the Republic, that each Post ascertain and report the names of all the widows and orphans of solders within its jurisdiction.

Wanted to Get Married. Yesterday an Italian named Pierini went to Justice Summerfield to get married. The Justice thought the girl looked rather young, and asked the man a few questions, which were answered all right, but the girl, who is but 16, called the Justice one side and told him she was too young, did not like the man, and did not want to get married, and so the Justice refused to perform the ceremony. They went to a different clergyman, who also refused. They then left for Virginia City. They hail from Dayton.

Had a Fine Time. Mr. and Mrs. Sam Bigelow and Mr. and Mrs. Leete Blanchard had arranged for a picnic supper at Bowers’ Mansion last evening. The rain upset their plans a little, the supper being given at the Bigelow home, after which their guests left in autos for Bowers. The party took possession of the swimming pools and later danced, the gold conference party arriving there about 10 o’clock, joined with them and a pleasant time was had by all.

In what the two District Court judges here called an effort to clear the air and restore public trust in Douglas County government, judges Monday ordered that a grand jury be empaneled to investigate county operations.
Trent Dolan is the son of Bill Dolan, who wrote this column for the Nevada Appeal from 1947 until his death in 2006.
