Non-essential staff should not be on campus before 10 a.m. ••• WNC's Carson City campus, including the Child Development Center, will be closed today, Friday, March 16 due to weather. Fallon and Douglas campuses remain open. ••• The Boys & Girls Clubs of Western Nevada also will be closed today. ••• The Carson City Animal Shelter is closed today. "Our staff is there caring for the animals but due to roads and other obstacles for our staff we decided to have a snow day. Our Carson location does still have animal control officers on call and ready to go for urgent needs, but all adoptions at the shelter or offsite events will remain closed. RENO — Wintry weather is returning to most of Nevada on the heels of record rain across the northern half of the state.
A winter storm warning is in effect for the Lake Tahoe area from 2 p.m. today through 5 a.m. Saturday and for the Reno, Sparks and Carson City areas from 8 p.m. Thursday to 11 p.m. Friday.
“Another storm system and cold front could bring significant snowfall to much of northern and central Nevada starting Thursday evening in the northwest, spreading southeastward on Friday into Friday night, with lingering areas of snow possible on Saturday,” the National Weather Service said Thursday.
The Sierra Avalanche Center in Truckee, California issued an avalanche watch for Lake Tahoe’s backcountry through 7 a.m. Saturday.
As much 2 feet (60 centimeters) of snow is possible at lake level at Tahoe by the time the storm makes its way through the region, with as much as 4 feet (1.2 meters) in the upper elevations.
The weather service says 2 to 6 inches (50 to 150 millimeters) of snow is expected in the valleys from Reno-Sparks to Gardnerville, with as much as a foot (30 centimeters) of snow possible above 5,000 feet (1,500 meters).
Snow already was falling Thursday morning around Lake Tahoe.
About 17 inches (43 centimeters) has fallen in the last 48 hours at the Heavenly ski resort on the south end of the lake. Six inches (15 centimeters) fell overnight at Squaw Valley and 10 inches (25 centimeters) at Tahoma on the west side of the lake, the service said.
