The Popcorn Stand: Pepperoni pizza is all I need

While I love pizza, I generally like to keep it simple. Sure a combination pizza is pretty cool, but even then I like just the standard combo pizza of pepperoni, sausage, bell pepper, olives, onions and mushrooms.

And yes, you can pretty much put anything you want on pizza no matter what Poppy told Kramer in Seinfeld.

Sometimes I get wild and crazy like Steve Martin and eat pineapple pizza. Or Neopolitan ice cream.

But like Steve Martin in “The Jerk” all I need is a pepperoni pizza and most Americans agree with me. That’s why Sept. 20 has been set aside as National Pepperoni Pizza Day.

As far as I know (which consisted of doing about three minutes of research), pepperoni pizza is the only specific type of pizza that has its own day.

There’s National Pizza Day. Beer and Pizza Day. But Pepperoni has a day all to itself.

And that’s not surprising because pepperoni has become as American as hot dogs, baseball, apple pie and Chevrolet. (Look it up Millennials, we Baby Boomer/Buster/Generation Xers have fond memories of that jingle).

Pepperoni is the most popular type of pizza there is, preferred by 36 percent of people.

And do some research on the interwebs to find out what kind of deals you can get on Pepperoni Pizza Day from places like Domino’s and Pizza Hut. And of course Little Caesars has their Hot-N-Ready pepperoni pizzas.

And when I order that medium pepperoni pizza on September 20, I don’t want to eat too much so I’ll be like Yogi Berra. When the person asks me do I want the pizza cut in eight slices or 12, I’ll reply, “You better make it eight, I don’t think I could eat 12.”
