Report: initial jobless claims in Nevada increased 14.6% last week

For the week ending March 6, initial claims for unemployment insurance in Nevada totaled 10,548, up 1,340 claims, or 14.6%, compared to the previous week’s total of 9,208 claims, according to finalized data released March 12 by the Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation.

It marks the second consecutive week of increases in initial claims, according to DETR — for the week ending Feb. 27, initial claims totaled 9,208,
which was up 1,699 claims, or 22.6%, compared to the previous week.

All told, according to the March 12 data, there have been a total of 878,734 initial claims filed since the week ending March 14, 2020, through the week ending March 6, 2021.


Other statistics noted in the March 12 report are as follows:


  • Continued claims, which represent the current number of insured unemployed workers filing weekly for unemployment insurance benefits, totaled 72,058 claims, a decrease of 489 claims, or 0.7%, from the previous week’s total of 72,547.
  • The Pandemic Emergency Unemployment Compensation (PEUC) program, which provides benefits to individuals who have exhausted their regular unemployment benefits, saw 71,695 claims filed in the week, an increase of 15,400 claims from last week’s total of 56,295.
  • The State Extended Benefit (SEB) program currently provides up to 20 weeks of benefits to individuals who have exhausted both their regular and PEUC program benefits. Nevada saw 64,961 claims filed in the week, a decrease of 13,260 claims from a week ago.
  • The insured unemployment rate for the regular UI program, which is the ratio of regular continued claims in a week to the total number of jobs covered by the unemployment insurance system (also known as covered employment), fell to 5.4% from the previous week’s rate of 5.5%.
  • The Pandemic Unemployment Assistance (PUA) program — which provides benefits for self-employed, 1099 contract workers and gig workers — saw 5,152 initial claims filed in the week ending March 6, a decline of 1,588 claims, or 23.6%, from last week’s total of 6,740.
  • Through the week ending March 6, there have been a total of 1,098,849 PUA initial claims filed.
  • There were 76,896 PUA continued claims filed in the week ending March 6, a decrease of 7,040 claims, or 8.4%, from the previous week’s revised total of 83,936.
