Gov. Steve Sisolak says Nevada is joining the effort to advance the market for medium- and heavy-duty electric vehicles.
A memorandum of understanding includes not only big rigs but large pickups and vans, delivery trucks, school and transit buses.
He said Nevada joins 16 other states, the District of Columbia and Quebec in the effort.
Sisolak said joining the group will better position Nevada to respond to regulatory changes at the federal level and to move the state closer to meeting its greenhouse gas emissions goals.
“Shifting toward zero emission vehicles will also help improve air quality for all Nevadans,” he said.
After passenger cars, medium- and heavy-duty trucks and buses are the largest source of greenhouse gas emissions in the U.S.
Nevada has used Volkswagen settlement money to help agencies replace diesel vehicles including school and transit buses, leveraging more than $16.5 million to purchase low and zero-emission alternative vehicles.
