As Reno and Sparks continue to experience rapid growth, the demand for sustainable, attractive, and functional outdoor spaces is significantly rising. Landscaping services, including design, maintenance, and water-efficient solutions, have become essential for commercial developments. This trend not only enhances aesthetics of business districts, but also reflects the broader economic landscape.
Since the 1990s, Reno/Sparks has experienced significant, and consistent population growth, often ranked as the fastest growing area in the United States.
Since the 2020 Census, Reno’s population has grown by 4.1% adding more than 10,000 residents, while Sparks added 1,860 residents for a 1.7% increase. Existing-home sales in Reno soared to 21% year-over-year in December 2024, outpacing national growth trends. This spike indicates robust area demand. In 2024, the Reno-Sparks Metropolitan Statistical Area experienced job growth, with non-farm employment rising by 3,100 positions. This population and employment growth translates into higher demand for housing and commercial development.
As commercial developers strive to enhance their projects’ appeal in the competitive Northern Nevada market, landscaping plays a critical role. Where once minimal landscaping surrounding commercial spaces sufficed, today’s business consumers are increasingly discerning. They prioritize landscaping maintenance, water efficiency, functionality, and design. To remain competitive, Nevada commercial developers must ensure their landscaping meets modern expectations whether they are developing large warehouses, constructing state-of-the-art office buildings, or updating existing buildings.
From large-scale development projects to new shopping centers and corporate campuses, the demand for landscaping solutions that meet aesthetic, environmental, and functional needs is on the rise. A thoughtfully designed landscaping plan enhances consumer appeal, whether for retail, industrial, or commercial spaces.
As our population increases, ongoing water challenges come to the forefront. How can we manage this precious resource amidst industrial growth, and natural ecosystem preservation? Sustainable landscaping has emerged as a key selling point for commercial properties in Northern Nevada. Commercial property owners are drawn to spaces that offer functionality with minimal maintenance costs. Water conservation has become paramount, driven by both cost and environmental concerns. Implementing hardscapes like pavers and artificial turf in lieu of expansive lawns, along with drought-tolerant plants, reduces watering needs and water bills as well.
Green infrastructure — such as vertical gardens and strategic tree planting — not only enhances aesthetics but also provides functionality like insulation and stormwater management. These practices can significantly decrease energy consumption by providing summer shade and winter sunlight. Moreover, businesses are increasingly favoring locally sourced and recycled materials for exterior landscaping pathways, retaining walls, and seating. This reduces environmental impact, and supports the local economies.
The rising need for professional landscaping services not only meets the demand for outdoor beautification but also creates jobs within the community. Landscaping is a diverse industry that spans various specialties for both commercial and residential properties, necessitating significant manpower. From sustainable landscape architects to lawn maintenance workers, the increased demand in landscaping translates into broader employment benefits for the region.
Landscaping tangibly impacts our daily lives. Despite the natural beauty surrounding us in Northern Nevada, many areas boast professionally-landscaped environments – ranging from curated sustainable spaces to manicured lawns. This professional touch influences the real estate landscape we encounter every day.
We anticipate continued population and business growth and an enhanced desire for beautiful, sustainable living spaces and surroundings. Landscaping will increasingly affect the attractiveness of commercial properties to tenants and buyers. Forward-thinking Nevadans will embrace emerging landscaping trends to stay ahead in the competitive market.
Ultimately, landscaping trends and demand serve as barometers for the community’s economic health and future direction. From my observations, we are moving positively – optimizing resources, cultivating functional outdoor spaces, and stimulating economic activity which all benefit the greater northern Nevada community.
