Q: Since your last Business Spotlight in 2021, how has Helix Electric, LLC (Helix) evolved in terms of project scope and company size? Could you share some milestones that highlight this growth?
Since 2021, Helix Electric, LLC has experienced significant growth across all fronts. Our revenue climbed from $167 million in 2021 to $290 million in 2024, with projections of up to $350 million in 2025. We have strengthened our leadership team, expanded our presence in new niche markets, especially data centers, and have become a recognized force in the Salt Lake City market. Despite the uncertainty the pandemic created back then, we kept our workforce intact, which has only deepened employee loyalty and strengthened our foundation today.
Q: Helix is recognized for its philanthropic work. Why is it important to you that the company you lead is present in the communities you serve?
We believe deeply in giving back. Our team takes pride in being present and active in the communities we serve. We host major fundraising events twice a year in Las Vegas and annually in Reno, raising significant funds for local causes. We have also expanded our charitable reach to include causes that our employees personally support, making community involvement part of our company culture.
Q: How are you prioritizing workforce development? Talk about the huge investment in Helix University.
Last year alone, we invested $900,000 in training and education through Helix University. We doubled the number of internal classes available to employees and hired dedicated staff to oversee workforce development. We are also bringing on more than 15 college interns this summer, with the goal of growing future leaders from within. This level of investment reflects our belief that training is the key to becoming a top-tier organization. Our employees receive these resources at no cost, allowing them to build skills without accumulating debt.
Q: The move to a new 19,000-square-foot facility in Reno signifies a major investment. How has this new space enhanced your operations in Northern Nevada since moving in?
The new facility has reinforced our status as the largest electrical contractor in Reno. While our work takes place in the field, this space gives our employees a professional environment they can be proud of. It also enhances our company image and credibility with prospective clients and team members alike. It shows we’re here to stay and serious about long-term success in the region.
Q: The construction industry has faced various challenges recently, from supply chain disruptions to labor shortages. How has Helix adapted to these obstacles to maintain project timelines and quality?
We have tackled labor shortages head-on by focusing on in-house training and early talent development. We are actively working with high schools to introduce students to career opportunities in construction and support programs like Hope for Prisoners, where formerly incarcerated individuals receive training to reintegrate into the workforce. These efforts are more than filling positions, they are about building careers and strengthening communities.
Q: Looking ahead, what are your priorities for success for Helix in the next five years, especially concerning tech advancements and market expansion?
We see tremendous opportunity in the continued growth of the data center market and hope to remain a key player as that space expands. Affordable housing will also continue to be a major focus, as the need is still strong across our markets. In Utah, we are preparing for major infrastructure related to the resort corridor and upcoming Olympic developments. We are also keeping a close eye on how tech will further influence operations and training in our field.
Q: As a leader, what lessons have you learned in your career that have influenced your approach to steering Helix forward?
The most important lesson is simple: take care of your people. A company of our size can only succeed if we support and invest in the individuals who show up every day. That is why we have recently enhanced our benefits package, including four weeks of PTO—among the most competitive in the industry—and company paid health care. When you put people first, success follows.
Q: Finally, what message would you share with your peers in the construction industry?
Be successful, but don’t forget your community. Our industry builds the physical foundation of society, but we also have a responsibility to build up the people in it.
