About the speakers:

Dr. Shamik Sengupta is an Associate Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering and Executive Director of the Cybersecurity Center at University of Nevada, Reno (UNR). His research interests include cognitive radio and DSA networks, game theory, cybersecurity, network economics and self-configuring wireless mesh networks. He has authored over 80 international conferences and journal publications. He is the recipient of an IEEE GLOBECOM 2008 best paper award, International Symposium on Performance Evaluation of Computer and Telecommunication Systems 2017 best paper award and a recipient of NSF CAREER award in 2012. Shamik Sengupta serves on the organizing and technical program committee of several IEEE conferences. He is serving in the Editorial Boards of several journals. He is the Lead PI of six NSF grants and Senior Personnel in one NSF grant.

Brandon Peterson is currently the Chief Information Security Officer at the Desert Research Institute, world renowned for its leadership in environmental research. Brandon is also a SANS community instructor and has taught Incident Handling and Hacker Techniques to students throughout the country. A native Nevadan and graduate of the University of Nevada, Reno, Brandon has spent the last 18 years managing IT infrastructure and security for banking, media, higher education and research. A winner of the SANS Ninja coin contest for Network Penetration Testing and Ethical Hacking, Brandon is a proven expert in cyber security. In addition to his GIAC-GPEN certification, Brandon holds the GCIH, GSEC, GCED, GCIA certifications from SANS and the Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) certification from (ISC). Brandon is committed to excellence and improving Nevada’s cyber security posture through collaboration, training, and research.

Mr. Darren McBride is an electrical engineer, Microsoft Certified Instructor, HIPAA certified, and has taught classes on “ethical hacking”. He was the long time host of the “Computer Bytes” radio show on KKOH. He will discuss real world examples of actual attacks that succeeded in Reno. Bad guys try to steal social security numbers, fool people into doing wire transfers, encrypt data to blackmail businesses, and many other scams. He’ll also discuss the top 10 ways to protect yourself from data loss and infection, as well as laws like HIPAA and SOX.
