Authorities: Trucker killed woman, then self after interstate drive

ELKHORN, Neb. - A truck driver apparently killed a woman he met at a Kansas bar, then drove 200 miles to his Nebraska hometown where he dumped the body and killed himself, police said Monday.

Mitchell Witt, 36, of Elkhorn was found outside his truck, dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, Douglas County Sheriff Tim Dunning said. A note indicated ''she'' was in the sleeping compartment.

Inside the truck was Karen Jones, 36, of Emporia, Kan. Her body was beaten and mutilated.

''I don't know why I did it,'' the note said.

The bodies were found early Saturday. Based on trucking logs and other evidence, police believe Witt killed Jones in Emporia on Thursday, Dunning said. Jones was a single mother of a 15-year-old boy.
