Candidates that aren't appear on ballot

At least two candidates on the ballot for Douglas County Commission would rather not be there.

Al Wagner and Elaine Smith announced last summer they were pulling out of the commission race.

Both candidates say they are not actively campaigning for the positions.

"If people vote for me that's something else," she said. "I don't know what will happen in that case. But, at this point, I withdrew from campaigning."

Wagner announced in July that he was no longer a candidate.

"I contacted the newspaper months ago," he said. "I would have put up my signs up and everything else if I was going to run."

Wagner said his position as a Gardnerville Ranchos General Improvement District would conflict with being a commissioner.

"I can't fit it into my schedule," he said. "There has been too much of a conflict with GRGID and running for county commissioner. It's too much work. There will be nothing left for my personal life."

Wagner laughed when asked what would happen if he won.

"I don't think that is too much of a possibility," he said.

Douglas County Clerk Barbara Reed said the candidates withdrew too late to be removed from the general-election ballot.

"Barbara came in personally and told me," Reed said. "Al Wagner sent me a letter."

As long as the two candidates lose - Wagner is up against Steve Weissinger, and Smith is facing Kelly Kite - Reed said there won't be an issue.

However, if either candidate wins, then Wagner and Smith would have to resign to get off the board of commissioners.

"They are elected; they would have to make the choice if they wanted to hold the position or resign," she said. "If they decide to resign, county commissioners seats are filled by the governor."

Reed said the election season has been busy so far.

"We've mailed out 2,500 absentee ballots. I don't remember ever getting to 2,500," she said.

About 450 people a day have been voting early in Douglas.
