Carson man in custody after allegedly holding infant son hostage

A Carson City man is in custody after he allegedly held his infant son hostage late Thursday night.

Orrin Tyrel Hayes, 21, was arrested after family members told deputies he had threatened to kill himself and his 12-day-old baby if they didn't clear out of the Cherry Creek apartment they shared.

As deputies approched the apartment, Hayes drove away from his apartment building. Deputies chased Hayes' black Kia Sportage northbound on Highway 395 and then east on Sonoma. According to the sheriff's report, Hayes ran a stop sign at Silver Sage, turning south and then west on Sunchase with his vehicle lights out, stopping at the end of the dead end street.

Deputies said Hayes stuck his hands out of the vehicle's window. He was ordered out of the vehicle, but paced up and down talking to himself. Deputies rushed Hayes and subdued him after ordering him to stand still several times.

The infant was found in a child seat inside the Kia.

After taking Hayes into custody, deputies had to subdue him several times to keep him from hurting himself in the backseat of the patrol car, according to the report.

He was booked into Carson City Jail on charges of battery, assault with a deadly weapon, kidnapping with a deadly weapon, endangering a child, DUI, and attempting to elude police.

Hayes appeared in Carson City Justice Court on Friday morning and was ordered held for psychiatric evaluation. He is being held in lieu of $500,000.
