DNA proves baby was that of slain pregnant woman

RAVENNA, Ohio - Genetic testing has confirmed a baby found alive in the home of its mother's alleged killer was cut from the woman's womb after she was killed.

Prosecutor Victor V. Vigluicci said Friday the week-old baby named Oscar is the son of Jon Andrews and his slain wife, Theresa, who was 23.

Michelle Bica, 39, who shot and killed herself Tuesday as officers arrived to question her about the pregnant woman's disappearance, was suspected of killing Theresa Andrews.

Authorities have said Bica told her husband the baby was theirs, and she had given birth while he was working.

The baby was discharged from a hospital in good health on Thursday in the temporary custody of Jon Andrews, pending the DNA test results.

His wife's body was dug up Monday night from the dirt floor of Bica's garage.

Police Chief Randall McCoy said the two women may have met during a chance encounter three or four weeks ago in the baby section of the Wal-Mart store in this community 32 miles southeast of Cleveland.

''It was just an - 'Oh, you're pregnant? I'm pregnant, too' - type deal,'' McCoy told The Plain Dealer in an interview published Friday.

Neighbors and police said Bica told people until early September that she was pregnant with a girl. She later said results of an ultrasound revealed she actually was expecting a boy, and her due date was pushed back two weeks to Sept. 20.
