Letter: Benefit package not the same as pay raise

I feel the need to respond to some of the comments in your "Two Cents" column.

Why is it that people believe that because I have a better vacation package than they do that I am not entitled to a fair and equitable wage? Vacation days do not pay my bills. And taking a real vacation is a joke. I can't afford it.

I am a single parent. I am a management assistant with the state. I make maybe $25,000 a year. I live just above the poverty line. I live paycheck to paycheck and God forbid any type of emergency should arise. I can't afford emergencies.

I don't ask for handouts or any other assistance. I pay my way ... barely.

I am sorry that some people do not get the type of benefits I am getting. But I should not be penalized for receiving the benefits that I do. I am just asking to receive a salary that I can live on. What's wrong with that?
