Letter: Firefighting helpers made the difference

Last week in the hills north of Stagecoach and Silver Springs, we experienced a large and spectacular wildland fire. It was named the Ramsey Fire. The Ramsey Fire consumed a total of 7,597 acres, 6,402 in Lyon County. More than 80 percent was private land. The terrain was steep and rocky; the weather warm and extremely windy. The fire was incredibly unpredictable. It took the efforts of hundreds of firefighters, support people and command staff to finally bring this fire under control. Fortunately, no homes were threatened and the antenna facilities at the mountaintop were all saved.

I want to extend my personal thanks as well as the thanks of the Central Lyon County Fire Protection District Board of Directors to everyone who assisted in the Ramsey Fire. This includes the Silver Springs, Stagecoach, Dayton Valley and Six Mile Canyon volunteer fire departments, the Lyon County Road Department, the Nevada Division of Forestry and most of all, the U.S. Bureau of Land Management which provided the resources required to bring the Ramsey Fire under control. The interagency cooperation and willingness to help each other on this fire was awesome. It made me proud to be a member of the Central Lyon County Fire Protection District as well as a member of the Sierra Front Wildfire Cooperators.
