George Holbrook Hawes III, 68, a Las Vegas resident, died Sept. 20, 2000 in Las Vegas. He was born Aug. 26, 1932, in Morristown, N.J. to George Holbrook II and Helen Cook Hopping Hawes.
He first came to Nevada with his father in 1942. He lived in Carson City in the past and continued to be a frequent visitor.
He received degrees in forestry and law from the University of Maine and following post-graduate work at Georgetown University, he was admitted to practice before the United States Supreme Court.
Mr. Hawes had been Deputy Attorney General of the State of Nevada and past District Attorney for Eureka County.
He was a man of many talents. During the course of his life, he was a cowboy, railroad gandy dancer, highway construction worker, surveyor, boxer, movie actor, musician, sportsman, mechanic, soldier, attorney, accomplished photographer, forester, conservationist, traveler, writer and avid reader. He was devoted to his family and a meticulous genealogical researcher of the family histories.
He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict, achieving the rank of sergeant and was honored as Soldier of the Month during his service.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Helen Hopping Hawes Cleveland of Fort Collins, Colo. and an infant son.
Among his survivors are his father George Holbrook Hawes II, 96, of Carson City; brother and sister-in-law David Holbrook and Barbara Babcock Hawes of Fort Collins, Colo.; nephews David Remington (Rem) Hawes of Washington, DC and Steven Holbrook Hawes of Fort Collins; two uncles; nine cousins and many friends.
A memorial service was held in Las Vegas and interment will be in Skowhegan, Maine.
