Sex offender council to review guidelines

The Nevada Advisory Council for Community Notification of Sex Offenders will meet at the Legislative Building on Monday in Carson City.

The seven-member council gathers input on the guidelines and procedures for community sex offender notification and sends its findings to local law enforcement agencies statewide.

Senior Deputy Attorney General Joe Ward Jr. who sits on the council said the public is encouraged to attend.

"We try to gather as much information as we can from everyone and see if any changes need to be made to the guidelines," he said.

Nevada has a federal mandate to notify communities when known sex offenders are released from custody or move into a neighborhood. The guidelines help determine types of notification based on the seriousness of the crime.

The council is made up of legislative council bureau and governor appointees.

The meeting will take place from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in room 2135 of the Legislative Building at 401 South Carson Street.

The meeting can be viewed on the Internet at www.leg.state.nv.us and guidelines can be downloaded at www.ag.state.nv.us under the link "Hot Topics."

The meeting will also be viewed via video conference in Las Vegas at the Grant Sawyer building.
