Ace brand shingling hatchets recalled

WASHINGTON - Ace Hardware is recalling 22,000 hatchets used for installing and removing roof shingles because the tool's head can detach and strike people.

The company, based in Oak Brook, Ill., has received two reports of the hatchet heads detaching, the Consumer Product Safety Commission said Thursday. In one case, a bystander was struck in the head, causing a cut that required 32 stitches.

The shingling hatchet is about 13 inches long with a hickory handle and a leather strap on the end. The steel head has a hatchet on one side and a hammering face on the other.

The word ''Ace'' is etched on one side of the tool head with ''TAIWAN'' on the other side, and a number on the handle reads ''2014710.''

Ace Hardware Stores nationwide sold the hatchet from March 1994 through April 2000 for about $18.

The safety commission advises consumers to stop using the hatchets immediately and return them to any Ace Hardware Store for a refund. For more information, consumers can call Ace Hardware at 1-877-223-4391 between 8 a.m. and 7 p.m. EDT Monday through Friday.
