Brief: Sierra Club offers scholarship

The deadline for the Sierra Club's new scholarship program, a program that will provide academic funding for students who are graduating from high school in spring 2000, has been extended from March 4 to March 10.

Five scholarships, each worth $1,000 per year for four years, will be awarded to students who reside in small communities or rural areas within Nevada and are entering programs leading to a bachelor's degree in any academic field. The students may begin their course work in the community college system and transfer to a four-year college.

Prospective students should consult with their high school principals or counselors for application forms and rules.

Applications must be postmarked by March 10. Students must submit an application form and a current transcript. In addition, they must write an essay about the future of their community. The essay should identify problems and suggest solutions. Although the Sierra Club wants to know about any challenges the local community may face, they are particularly interested in environmental problems and their possible solutions. Students might want to develop their ideas by interviewing local business people and community leaders. They may want to discuss ways in which they personally could contribute to the well-being of their communities when they return from college. Native Americans are particularly encouraged to apply.
