Brush fire burns in northeastern San Diego

SAN DIEGO - Air tankers and water-dropping helicopters assisted ground crews in battling a canyon brush fire in northeastern San Diego on Sunday afternoon.

The fire burned at least 100 acres near the border with the city of Poway in open space and farm land, said Elaine Maisen, a dispatcher with San Diego city Fire Department.

''It's agriculture, slow burning. It's putting up a lot of smoke,'' Maisen said.

No injuries or structure damage were reported. There are some homes in the area but no evacuations were immediately ordered.

San Diego resident Philip Teyssier lives about three miles west of the fire and could see smoke from his home.

The flames appeared to moving east, Teyssier said.

''I can see it but I can't smell,'' he said. ''I could see flames and there were two helicopters and two airplanes dropping water and fire retardant.''

The U.S. Forest Service, California Department of Forestry and San Diego County fire departments were assisting.
