Carson City museums open for Memorial Day holiday

Carson City's museums will be open for the Memorial Day holiday.

Visitors can ride the Nevada State Railroad Museum's train of historic Virginia & Truckee Railroad equipment at the annual Memorial Day Steam Up Saturday, Sunday and Monday.

The museum's steam train will operate at 40-minute intervals starting at 10 a.m. with the last train at 4 p.m. The fare is $2.50 for adults, 50 cents for children 6-11 years of age and under 6 get to ride free.

The museum's interpretive center will be open from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The admission charge is $2; under the age of 18 get in free. There is no charge for entrance to the museum grounds.

Other steam-ups scheduled for this year will take place June 17 and 18 (dads ride free), July 1 through 4, July 22 and 23, Aug. 4 and 6, Aug. 19 and 20, Sept. 2 through 4, Oct. 21, 22 and 28 and Dec. 9 and 10.

The Children's Museum of Northern Nevada, which is usually closed on Mondays, will be open all three days this weekend.

The museum at 813 N. Carson St. will be open from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The gift shop is also open.

The Nevada State Museum will be open for the holiday. Admission is $3.

With the exception of the Carson City Marriage Bureau, which will be open from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and emergency services, city workers will have the day off.

State and federal offices, schools and banks will be closed in observance of the holiday.
