Construction on Carson City's new post office hasn't started yet, but it should be done by Nov. 1, 2000.
If everything goes as planned, Carson residents will be mailing their Christmas packages from the new 37,000-square-foot facility on the corner of Little Lane and Roop Street next December.
The office will replace the main office which has been located on Washington Street since 1970. The new building, which will sit on a six-acre, landscaped site, was designed after the Paul Laxalt State Building.
Built in 1888, the Laxalt Building was the location of the post office before it moved to Washington Street. The total cost of the project is around $7.5 million.
The new post office will offer increased services to the area, including an increase in parking from 18 spaces to 78 spaces.
The Washington Street office has 3,250 post office boxes and the new building will have 5,318 boxes.
Like the new Ormsby Station and the post office branch at the Super Kmart on North Carson Street, the new station will offer a postal store to cater to stamp buffs and people interested in post office merchandise.
