Bernie Curtis, chief deputy of the Carson City Sheriff's Deparment, may be leaving in January for a deputy director's post at the Department of Motor Vehicles and Public Safety.
Neither Curtis nor DMV officials would confirm the report. Department officials said they plan a press release in January regarding the status of the vacant position.
There are two deputy directors at the Department of Motor Vehicle, one of which is vacant. The position pays a maximum of $88,268 a year.
Curtis, 52, is currently the No. 3 man at the Carson City department under Sheriff Rod Banister. Banister could not be reached for comment.
Curtis retired from the Douglas County Sheriff's Office in 1994 after 22 years with the department. He started working part-time at in 1998 in Carson City, becoming the chief deputy when the position was vacated by Bill Callahan, who was promoted to undersheriff.
Curtis, who lives in Gardnerville, was elected a Douglas County commissioner in 1996.
He has done course work at Butte Community College and Chico State College in California, and is a graduate of the police and FBI academies.
