Former Congressional candidate arrested for alleged election violations

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - A man who failed to get on the ballot for the 42nd Congressional District special election November 1999 was arrested for investigation of perjury and election code violations.

Khalil Fahiem Khalil, 58, was arrested Friday at the San Bernardino County District Attorney's office.

Authorities claim Khalil turned in petitions that included questionable signatures. Khalil was attempting to gather enough signatures to enter the race for the seat left vacant by the late Rep. George E. Brown, D-San Bernardino.

Khalil signed documents under penalty of perjury that stated he witnessed all the signatures that were gathered. The County Registrar of Voters, however, found that many of the signatures did not match those of voters on file.

Khalil faces 23 charges, said Stan Welch, of the district attorney's office.

Khalil was being held at the West Valley Detention Center in Rancho Cucamonga in lieu of $75,000 bail.
