Kiwanis presents funds to charities

The Kiwanis presented $5,250 to three Carson City charities as a result of their Y2Kiwanis fund-raiser on New Year's Eve.

Carson City co-chairman Tom Baker presented checks for $1,750 each to Suzi Meehan, executivedirector of the Children's Museum; to Linda Bowman, volunteer for the Advocates to End Domestic Violence; and to Rita Carmen, board member of CASA. The club was able to place an additional $1,750 in its project account.

Carson City Kiwanis and the Ormsby House Hotel/Casino raised $7,000 at the event, selling out.

Baker and Ray Frederick chaired the Y2Kiwanis New Year's Eve Committee with support from committee members Ken Beaton, marketing; Bryan Bibee, ticket chairman; Rita Carman, decorations; Al Stillwell, table reservations with past President Jim Hamtak and Treasurer Dan Nevin.

President Ron Bowman said funds raised would stay in Carson City.

"Each of you can have a warm feeling in your heart that the proceeds will stay in our community to financially aid the Advocates to End Domestic Violence, a nonprofit agency which provides a safe, supportive atmosphere in which victims can reexamine themselves and work toward a positive violence-free future.

"CASA trains volunteers to advocate in juvenile court for children who have been removed from the home due to abuse of neglect.

"And the Children's Museum of Northern Nevada is a private nonprofit educational center dedicated to offering unique and innovative hands-on learning adventures in art, sciences and humanities, and Kiwanis youth programs. We are so fortunate to live in a caring community like Carson City."
