Donald G. Campbell, 70, of Carson City died Dec. 4, 1999 at the Washoe Medical Center in Reno. He was born July 8, 1929 in Hartford, S.D. to Clayton and Myrta (Starks) Campbell.
Entering the military as a young man, Campbell served 21 years in the Navy and retired as Lt. Commander. During his service, Campbell graduated from the Navy School in Electronics, and Officer's Training School. Campbell came up through the ranks and in 1953 became one of the youngest chiefs in the Navy.
He was selected two years early for his position as Lt. Commander and was qualified to command a destroyer. Campbell worked in electronics and radar with the Navy, and earned a commendation medal for outstanding achievement in the performance of his duties in the field of anti-submarine warfare.
After retiring from the Navy, he accepted a position as senior staff engineer at Cubic Electronics Corporation in San Diego, Calif.
He and his wife, Margaret, moved to Carson City 13 years ago to retire and enjoy the Nevada lifestyle. The couple was married in Olatha, Kan. on May 6, 1949 and celebrated their 50th anniversary last year.
Upon his death, Campbell was honored with a military burial at sea.
His is survived by his wife, Margaret of Carson City; sons John Campbell of Chandler, Ariz. and Terry Campbell of San Diego; daughters Ginnie Char of Parchment, Mich., and Jeri Kunerth of Ellensburg, Wa.; his sister Cryllda Campbell of Oregon City, Ore.; and brother Lloyd Campbell of Woodburn, Ore.
He is also survived by eight grandchildren, one great grandson, four aunts and numerous nieces and nephews.
