Snow forecast

Snow is expected to move back into Northern Nevada today, with accumulations of 1-3 inches possible.

Temperatures should remain in the 20s at night and move into the mid-40s during the day, according to the National Weather Service.

However, if you prefer the more esoteric forecasts of the Old Farmer's Almanac, then Nevadans better stock up on wood and snap up some heavy clothes.

The current edition of the venerable publication predicts temperatures that will put Las Vegas 5 degrees below normal this month, 7 below normal next month and 3 below in March.

It says colder-than-normal temperatures then will continue through the summer of 2000.

Forecasters scoff at the almanac, and even the magazine's publishers concede their outlooks are less than scientific.

It shows.

The period of Dec. 24-31 was supposed to be very cold. It was mild.

And despite its pleasant winters and Southwest locale, Las Vegas is placed by the almanac in the same climatic region as Reno, Salt Lake City and Boise, Idaho.

The almanac, therefore, predicts heavy snows for Las Vegas and the other cities next week, the second week in February and the last week of March.

It snows in Las Vegas about once a decade.
